Two people cheated death after a truck plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni ferry on Saturday, December 24.

Reports show that the lorry was transporting cement from Mombasa island when it plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Crossing Channel Mainland side.

The two, who were rescued, were the lorry driver and his conductor who were saved by standby divers and the security personnel manning the ferry crossing channel.

Confirming the incident, Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata noted that the lorry was disembarking from the ferry when it lost its breaks. The driver, in turn, lost control and plunged into the ocean.

“It was disembarking from the ferry but the driver lost control and the car plunged into the sea,” Elungata noted.

Overloaded lorry

Elungata added that the truck was, however, overloaded with cement, a traffic offence, which contributed to the mechanical breakdown.
