Mombasa man charged for carrying alcoholic drink in plastic bottle

An elderly man has been charged before a Shanzu court for the offence of carrying an alcoholic drink in a plastic bottle.

Gabrial Kililo was arraigned before Shanzu Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo and pleaded guilty to charges of packing alcoholic drink in a plastic container contrary to section 31(2)b as read with section 31(3) of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act number 4 of 2016.

Kililo in his mitigation told the court that he was not aware that it was an offence to use plastic bottles to ferry or store alcoholic drinks.

Pleads for forgiveness

He pleaded with the court for forgiveness.

The court heard that on January 6 this year at Mwembe Legeza area in Kisauni Sub-county within Mombasa county, the accused was found in possession of a litre of chang’aa which was packed in a plastic bottle which does not conform to the regulation of alcoholic drinks.

The court ordered Kililo to pay a fine of Ksh4,000 or serve a seven-day jail term in default.
