The wife of a man who drowned in Titanic dam within Juja, Kiambu county after his car plunged into the dam has broken silence.

Margaret Kiiru while speaking to Citizen Digital recounted that prior to the Monday incident, her husband who was a businessman had called to inform her of a business meeting he would be attending at 7:00 pm. She said that was the last time she heard from him.

Afterwards, every other message and call went unanswered.

“My husband left home for work on Monday morning, and we spoke in the evening around 7 pm. He said he was in Juja for a business meeting, I asked what he would want for dinner and that was the last time we spoke,” Kiiru recounted.

“I called and sent him messages but he was unreachable, very unusual of him because he has always been accessible,” she added.

A day later, Kiiru received a call from a friend who asked her to report to the police station.

The man is said to have drowned while in the company of a woman under mysterious circumstances.

The couple, said to be lovers, were reported to have spent the evening together having fun inside their Nissan X-Trail next to the dam situated along Kimbo-Kiganjo Road about four kilometres off the Thika superhighway before tragedy struck around 9.30 pm.

Witnesses said the man who was on the driver’s wheel attempted to reverse the car, but appeared to change his mind and engaged drive gears before ploughing into the dam.

Among the latest victims, the man was stark naked when he was pulled out of the water while the woman was half naked.

Kiambu County fire and rescue employees told journalists that more than 50 bodies had been retrieved from the same dam since 2021.

“The county government once fenced off the area, but we do not know who later removed the fence,” a diver who didn’t want to be named said.

Residents narrated how merrymakers use the open space around the dam as a recreational area where booze and drugs are consumed and sexual escapades.

Following the latest incident, police have imposed sanctions on the dam.

Juja sub-county police commander Philis Muthoni said no one will be allowed in the precincts of the water body after 6 pm as reports indicated that revellers often stayed there up to past midnight.

“We shall intensify police patrols in the area and ensure people do not stay there after dawn. We have collected many bodies of people who have drowned in that dam at night,” she said.
