US offers Ksh1.2B reward for wanted Al Shabaab leader

The US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program has offered a bounty of up to $10 million (Ksh1,236,600,000) for information leading to the arrest of Al Shabaab leader Maalim Ayman.

Ayman leads Jaysh Ayman, an Al Shabaab unit that conducts terrorist attacks and operations in Kenya and Somalia. He is believed to be the mastermind behind the Manda Bay Airfield attack in Lamu in January 2020.

The US noted that the bounty also extends to the arrest or conviction of individuals who aided the commission of the terrorist attack on US personnel in January 2020.

“We encourage anyone with information on those responsible for the 2020 attack on the Manda Bay Airfield to contact Rewards for Justice via Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp at +1-202-702-7843, or via local tips lines at +254 71 87 12 366 in Kenya and +252 68 43 43 308 in Somalia, All information will be kept strictly confidential,” RFj added.

Manda Bay attack

In January 2020, Jaysh Ayman conducted a pre-dawn raid which saw two US military service members and a US defence (DoD) contractor dead and several aircraft destroyed. The group also wounded two US service members and a third DoD contractor.

The group subsequently released a video claiming responsibility for the attack.

 In November 2020, the Department of State designated Ayman as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, as amended.
